چکیده

Viscosity of hydrous silicate melts is essential in modeling the dynamics of magma transport and volcanic eruptions. Numerous experimental measurements of viscosity, as well as viscosity models, have been published. For general melt compositions, the classic models of either Bottinga and Weill (1972) or Shaw (1972) are still used, not because they are reliable, but because of the extreme difficulty in calibrating something better (Lange 1994). For specific melt compositions, more advanced models and relations have been developed (e.g., Richet 1984; Richet et al. 1986, 1996; Hess and Dingwell 1996; Scaillet et al. 1996; Schulze et al. 1996; Dingwell et al. 1998a,

A long-duration experiment on hydrous species geospeedometer and hydrous melt viscosity

A 2.4-year controlled-cooling-rate experiment was carried out to investigate the dependence of hydrous species concentrations in rhyolitic melt on cooling rate. The experiment allows us to obtain speciation for a cooling rate of 1.68 · 10 6 K/s, extending previous experimental data by two orders of magnitude. Furthermore, a viscosity as high as 10 Pa s is inferred for this hydrous rhyolitic mel...

Silicate Melt Properties and Volcanic Eruptions

[1] Knowledge about the properties of silicate melts is needed by volcanologists and petrologists to evaluate the dynamics of volcanic eruptions and magmatic processes. These properties include the solubility and diffusivity of volatile components in silicate melts, silicate melt viscosity, and the fragmentation condition. Data and models of each property are reviewed and assessed. For rhyoliti...

Molecular H2O as carrier for oxygen diffusion in hydrous silicate melts

Dissolved water is known to dramatically enhance oxygen diffusion in silicate melts, glasses and minerals. A quantitative theory has been developed to explain this phenomenon by transport via molecular H2O diffusion [Y. Zhang, E.M. Stolper, G.J. Wasserburg, Diffusion of a multi-species component and its role in the diffusion of water and oxygen in silicates, Earth Planet. Sci. Lett., 103 (1991)...

Ar di¡usion in hydrous silicic melts: implications for volatile di¡usion mechanisms and fractionation

The effect of dissolved water on the diffusivity of Ar in glasses and melts of rhyolitic and albitic compositions was investigated experimentally at pressures up to 1500 MPa and water contents of 0.1^5 wt%. The data for water-poor rhyolitic composition at 500 MPa can be described in the whole temperature range of 480^11023C by a simple Arrhenius relationship DAr = 2.14U1036 m2/s exp(318 883/T)....

The speciation of dissolved H2O in dacitic melt

We report the first systematic study of H2O speciation in dacitic melt with total dissolved H2O ranging from 1.4 to 2.6 wt%. Samples were heated in a one-atmosphere tube furnace at 480–590 °C for certain durations and then quenched in water or air. Species concentrations were measured with Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. At a given temperature, the equilibrium constant for the r...
